Why is “shit-for-brains” hyphenated?
The hyphens are there because "shit-for-brains" is used like a compound adjective before a noun or is a compound noun.
- He’s a shit-for-brains idiot.
- He’s a shit-for-brains.
Here, "shit-for-brains" is one complete idea, describing the kind of idiot he is. The hyphens help show that those words belong together.
